Barbara Bacigalupi is a statistician and economist at the European Commission, Directorate General for Environment (DG-ENV), in the Unit Sustainable Development Goals, Green Finance and Economic Analysis.
She is responsible for developing and using environment-related indicators for monitoring progress on key EU policies, in particular on resource efficiency (Resource Efficiency Scoreboard), circular economy (monitoring framework for the circular economy), sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals indicators), the European Semester, resilience, in view of measuring progress beyond GDP.
During her career in the EC she was responsible for the Annual Environment Policy Review (2004-2009 editions, statistical part) and key EU environment-related indicators (2004-2009 editions). In DG-ENV she is responsible for the Beyond GDP initiative, particularly developing overall environmental indicators like consumption footprint, based on LCA, communicating on progress on Beyond GDP (dedicated website), the development and use European environmental-economic accounts (EU Regulation and European strategy), and the improvement and use of environmental indicators, for monitoring EU environmental, sectoral and cross-cutting policies. She is the liaison contact for the relations between DG-ENV and Eurostat.
Barbara holds a Master Degree in International Humanitarian Action from UCL, Belgium and Bachelor Degree in Statistics and Economics from La Sapienza University of Rome.
